- or forward slash is the most important symbol on IRC. It is used at the beginning of all commands i.e. /join <#channel> or /kick #MyChannel Esquire or /notice Esquire Hello Friend!
- or hash/pound/number symbol refers to a channel and should always be used in a command i.e. /msg ChanServ invite #MyChannel Esquire
- 8ball
- Refers to the name of a fortune telling type TCL on a bot/eggdrop. 8ball will it rain tomorrow. Then the bot/eggdrop will reply.
[A] - Access
- Refers to authorization to be in a bots/#channels access list with privileges according to the level/flags given.
- Acronym
- Refers to a word formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term.
- Action/Emotion
- Is an IRC command used to describe how an individual is feeling or what an individual would do live in person i.e. /me smiles at Esquire turns into * Friend smiles at Esquire.
- Active
- Individuals in a #channel could be active or not. Some are bots/eggdrops and are not there to chat. While others leave their computer/PC on while away from the keyboard. Therefore, if one is active they are chatting.
- Active List
- Refers to an ICQ program feature to create/join a group of individuals with the same interests.
- Advanced Mode
- Refers to a level on the ICQ program, the Advanced Mode is a level for individuals with more experience or whom wish to use more features available at that level.
- AKICK
- Used in a ChanServ command to keep an individual out of the #channel. ChanServ will proceed to kick the individual every time they try to join the channel. /msg ChanServ AKICK <#channel> <ADD|DEL|LIST> <hostmask>
- AL
- Is an acronym for the ICQ feature call Active List to create/join a group of individuals with the same interests.
- Alias
- Refers to a shortcut scripted in an IRC client/script.
- Alpha
- Either refers to the first version, testing version of a program or the icqalpha.mirabilis.com server for the ICQ program ONLY!
- Alt
- Refers to a key on the two ends of the spacebar on the keyboard. ALT keys are used for keyboard short cuts.
- AltaVista
- Is a Search Engine, used to search/surf the Internet/WWW and can be found at www.AltaVista.com.
- Annoy
- Refers to the act to disturb or irritate especially by repeated acts.
- AntiVirus
- Refers to a program/software distributed by Symantec to help protect a PC from being infected with a virus. Live updates and weekly virus scanning is essential.
- AOL
- Is an acronym for America OnLine, the globally known ISP for newbies!
- Applet
- Refers to a short application program especially for performing a simple specific task.
- Archives
- Refers to an area that holds the logs of chats and messages on the ICQ program.
- ASCII
- Is an acronym for American Standard Code for Information Interchange and is a code for representing alphanumeric information. Script kiddies use ASCII wherever they can on IRC. i.e. £åmê®
- Attachment
- Refers to a file added to an e-mail.
- AU
- Is a file extension for a sound file, usually used for Java Applets i.e. doorbell.AU
- Authorisation
- Refers to the act of allowing an individual, on the ICQ program, to be on an individuals Contact List as a Friend.
- Authorization
- Refers to the act of allowing an individual, on the ICQ program, to be on an individuals Contact List as a Friend.
- Auto-copy
- Refers to the act, on most IRC clients/scripts, of highlighting text from left to right on a window, it is auto copied … no need to right click and choose copy.
- Auto-get
- Refers to a feature in the basic mIRC client/script, there all mIRC base clients/scripts have this feature to automatically accept a file being sent either to you or another individual. This should be DISABLED. It is a major security risk.
- AUTOMASK
- Used in a NickServ command to automatically record every hotmask you use with that specific nickname. /msg NickServ SET AUTOMASK <ON|OFF>
- AUTOOP
- Used in a ChanServ command refering to a #channel access level.
- AUTOVOICE
- Used in a ChanServ command refering to a #channel access level.
- AV
- Is an acronym for AntiVirus referring to a program to help protect your computer/PC from being infected.
- AVI
- Is a file extension for a video file i.e. Singing_in_the_Rain.AVI
- AVP
- Is an acronym for Anti Viral Protection. AVP is a new comer to the Virii protection scene, however, the word is they have a great product found at www.avp.com
- Away
- Is an IRC command used to set display an away message i.e. /away be back in a bit :)
[B] - Backdoor
- Refers to a hole allowing someone onto a computer/PC without the victims knowledge. The abuser can perform many tasks including taking all control over a computer/PC by reading files, shutting down the computer/PC and many other tasks.
- Background
- Refers to something running on a shell i.e. a bot/eggdrop is one background process, running BitchX would be a second background process.
- Ban
- Refers to an IRC #channel ban, meant to keep unwanted individuals out of a #channel. /mode #MyChannel +b Esquire
- Binary
- Refers to a numeric binary system.
- BitchX
- Is a client/script for the Linux environment.
- BMP
- Is an extension for an image file i.e. SisandMe.BMP
- BNC
- Refers to an IRC bouncer, which is used through a shell and connects the individual to IRC with a Vhost such as Esquire@gave.all.my.money.to.the.US-GOVT.org.
- Bookmarks
- Refers to a menu entry or icon on a computer that is most often created by an individual that serves as a shortcut to a previously viewed location i.e. a web-site bookmark. Ctrl and D on your keyboard is a shortcut in windows to create a bookmark for a link to a site.
- Bot
- Refers to an egg, eggdrop, eggie, and Robot.
- BotNet
- Refers to bots/eggdrops being linked together to form its own network via the partline.
- Brows
- Is an abbreviation for Browsing the Internet/WWW.
- Browser
- Refers to the programs used to surf/search brows the Internet/WWW i.e. Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mosaic and Opera to name a few.
- Bseen
- Is has a vast collection of TCL's and eggdrop files found at http://mars.age.psu.edu/query.html Featuring a super search engine. If they do not have the script then it is probably not on the Internet/WWW.
- Bug
- Refers to a glitch in a program/software. Annoying as they are, the bugs eventually get resolved, most of the time.
- Button
- Refers to an icon that is clickable.
- Bytes
- Refers to a group of eight binary digits processed as a unit by a computer and used especially to represent an alphanumeric character.
[C] - Caps
- Refers to capital letters. Using all caps on IRC is equivalent to screaming or yelling in real life.
- CaSe Sensitive
- Most passwords are case sensitive allowing for a multitude of versions of the same password. Therefore, if a password is spelled CaSeIsReLeVaNt then that is how you must spell your password every time otherwise expect password errors.
- Cc
- Is an acronym for Carbon Copy referring to a copy being sent elsewhere.
- Channel
- Is the equivalent to a Room on IRC. Most IRC veterans will refer to it as a channel. If it were a room, would we not have lovely paintings and comfy furniture¿?
- ChanServ
- Is a program which allows you to register a #channel to be named as the founder, as well as other commands to maintain the #channel. /msg ChanServ help
- Chat
- Refers to the act of talking via the keyboard on the Internet in an informal environment.
- CLEAR
- Used in a ChanServ command to clear various #channel modes. /msg ChanServ CLEAR <#channel> <option>
- Clickable
- Refers to an e-mail address or URL that can be clicked to launch the default set program, set on the computer/PC, to load the appropriate program.
- Client
- Refers to a script used to navigate on IRC.
- Clone
- Refers to one that appears to be a copy of an original form. Most script kiddies have scripts that can produce many clones. They use these to flood #channels, individuals, servers and services :(
- CMDCLEAR
- Used in a ChanServ command referring to a #channel access level.
- CMDINVITE
- Used in a ChanServ command referring to a #channel access level.
- CMDOP
- Used in a ChanServ command referring to a #channel access level.
- CMDUNBAN
- Used in a ChanServ command referring to a #channel access level.
- CMDVOICE
- Used in a ChanServ command referring to a #channel access level.
- Coders
- Refers to an individual who writes a script i.e. an IRC client or addon, an bot/eggdrop file or TCL addon or a JavaScript or Applet.
- Command
- Refers to the text typed or scripted to get an end result i.e. /mode #MyChannel +o Esquire (the end result is Esquire is now an Op).
- Compile
- Refers to the process of creating a bot/eggdrop in a Unix environment.
- Compression
- Refers to the act, process, or result of compressing, to shrink in size.
- Computer
- Refers to a programmable electronic device that can store, retrieve, and process data i.e. a PC.
- Config
- Is an abbreviation for a configuration file, used to configure a bot/eggdrop.
- Config-file
- Is an abbreviation for a configuration file, used to configure a bot/eggdrop.
- Configure
- Refers to an act to set up for operation especially in a particular way.
- Connection
- Refers to the connection of an individual to the Internet/WWW.
- ConSeal
- Is a GREAT Firewall for a computer/PC found at www.consealfirewall.com/scripts/cfdownload.cfm which prevents from intruders gaining access to the computer/PC.
- Console
- Refers to a combination of readouts or displays and an input device, i.e. a keyboard, by which an operator can monitor and interact with a system, i.e. a computer.
- Contact
- Refers to a friend or family member who is located in the Contact List of an individual on the ICQ program.
- Contact List
- Refers to the list of friends and family members on the ICQ program.
- Contribute
- Refers to an act to play a significant part in bringing about an end or result.
- CoolLinks
- Refers to an ICQ web-page of highly visited and interesting links to websites.
- Copy
- Refers to the act of duplicating something that is highlighted to place it elsewhere.
- Copyright
- Refers to the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, and sell the matter and form.
- Corrupt
- Refers to an application that has changed for one reason or another and is no longer usable.
- Courteous
- Refers to the act or showing respect for an individual(s) and treating them with respect.
- CRC
- Is an acronym for Cyclic Redundancy Check. CRC is a simple checksum used for detecting errors.
- Crontab
- Refers to the file in an eggdrops directory which if set will verify that the bot/eggdrop is running. If the bot/eggdrop is not running the crontab will boot up the bot/eggdrop.
- Ctrl
- Is a key on a keyboard usually used to execute shortcuts.
- CTCP
- Is an acronym for Client To Client Protocol. A CTCP refers to retrieving information about an individual i.e. page, ping, time, userinfo, and version. The most used CTCP command is /me
- Currency
- Refers to money i.e. Canadian currency rate.
- Cursing
- Refers to the use of foul/bad language not appropriate for children to hear/view.
- Cut
- Refers to the act of taking a file and moving it by way of cut & paste.
- CuteFTP
- Is a program/software used to FTP files found at www.globalscape.com/products/cuteftp/
- Cycle
- Is a term used when an individual or bot/eggdrop parts and rejoins a #channel rapidly.
[D] - D:line
- Is a restriction on a server to allow a specified amount of individuals with the exact same IP on the server at the same time also used in server-server routing.
- DalNet
- Is a rather large IRC Network with many, many servers with over 55,000 users connected at one time. WOW!
- Data
- Refers to information in numerical form that can be digitally transmitted or processed.
- Database
- Refers to a collection of data organized especially for rapid search and retrieval. Refer to DB.
- Database Converter
- Refers to a feature on the ICQ program to correct minor glitches as well as be used when upgrading to change the data so that the new version can use the same data.
- DB
- Is an acronym for DataBase. The DB refers to the ICQ programs database, where all the logged chats and messages are stored. They are named as follows; DB(ICQ98), NewDB(ICQ99a), DB99b(ICQ99b), 2000a(ICQ2000a) and 2000b(ICQ2000b).
- DCC
- Is an acronym for Direct Client to Client protocol. DCC is used on IRC to transfer files as well as a more secure way of chatting, one on one. DCC is a direct connection to the individuals IP, therefore, in a netsplit you will still be connected.
- DCOM
- Is a collection of Internet Interoperability APIs. It is a Windows95 operating system update.
- Debug
- Refers to the act of eliminating errors in or malfunctions.
- Defamatory
- Refers to the act of defaming another individual.
- Defame
- Refers to the act to harm the reputation of an individual through slander.
- Default
- Refers to the settings the program/software had when you first installed the program/software.
- Del
- Either used in a IRC services command or refers to the delete key on a keyboard.
- Delete
- Refers to the process of erasing something permanently. The delete key is found on a keyboard above the arrow keys.
- Deop
- Is part of an IRC command used to take Ops status away from an individual in a #channel. /mode #MyChannel -o Esquire
- De-select
- Refers to the act of un-ticking or un-selecting a choice.
- Devoice
- Is part of an IRC command used to take Voice/Vop status away from an individual in a #channel. /mode #MyChannel -v Esquire
- Die
- Is a bot/eggdrop command used to disconnect a bot/eggrdop from the Internet.
- Directory
- Refers to a collection of files in a named place i.e. My Documents.
- Disable
- Refers to the act of changing a preference in a client or program.
- Disconnect
- Refers to the act of terminating the Internet connection, to be off-line.
- Distress
- Refers to the act of pain or suffering affecting the mind.
- Dll
- Refers to a file that is installed during the installation process to allow the program/software to work properly.
- DNS
- Is an acronym for Domain Name Service. This is the function of resolving a domain i.e. IRC.ICQ.Net to a numeric IP i.e. 205.188.253.229. /dns IP
- DOC
- Is an extension for a text file i.e. definitions.DOC
- Domain
- Refers to the act of complete and absolute ownership, i.e ICQ.com ICQ being the domain
- DoS
- Is an acronym for Denial Of Service.
- DoSing
- Refers to the act of attacking an individuals IP to disconnect, via a nuke attack. Sometimes these attack results in being disconnected from the server, or possibly the Internet if the modem was hit.
- Download
- Refers to the act to transfer data/files from one computer/PC to the memory of another computer/PC.
- Drag & Drop
- Refers to the act of clicking on a file, holding the click, moving the cursor to where you wish to drop the file and then finally release the click and the file is dropped into place.
- Dropdown
- Refers to this type of box where text drops down from a location above.
- DS1
- Refers to an Internet connection speed of 1.5 mbit/sec.
- DS3
- Refers to an Internet connection speed of 45 mbit/sec.
- Dynamic
- Refers to of random-access memory, requiring periodic refreshment of charge. Meaning a dynamic IP on a dial-up ISP that changes every time a connection to the Internet is made i.e. aol.com

- Refers to an Internet connection speed of 2.0 mbit/sec.
- Easter Egg
- Refers to a hidden treasure created by a programmer, which will either show credits of the co-programmers or be a kewl effect.
- Echo
- Refers to the effect seen in a bot the first time an individual DCC's the bot. It is a repeat affect of what you say on the partyline.
- Edit
- Refers to the action of changing things in a file.
- EFnet
- Is a rather large IRC Network with many, many servers.
- Egg
- Is an abbreviation for eggdrop.
- Eggdrop
- Is a TCL file designed to perform all the actions a live Op would, however, this eggdrop stays online 24/7 ensuring the protection of the channels as well as entertain individuals if other TCL's are added on.
- Eggie
- Is an abbreviation for eggdrop.
- Elements
- Refers to the simplest principles of a subject of study.
- Email/E-mail
- Refers to a means or system for transmitting messages electronically (as between terminals linked by telephone lines or microwave relays). A message sent electronically over the Internet.
- E-mail/Email
- Refers to a means or system for transmitting messages electronically (as between terminals linked by telephone lines or microwave relays). A message sent electronically over the Internet.
- Embarrass
- Refers to the act to cause to experience a state of self-conscious distress.
- EML
- Is an extension for an e-mail text i.e. Thanx_Esquire.EML

- Environment
- Refers to the circumstances, objects, or conditions by which an individual is surrounded.
- Erase
- Refers to the act to delete something.
- Error
- Refers to the outcome of two programs that conflict. Annoying!!!
- Esquire
- Refers to a member of the English gentry ranking below a knight. A candidate for knighthood, serving as shield bearer and attendant to a knight.
- Etiquette
- Refers to the conduct or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be observed in social life.
- Evidence
- Refers to something that furnishes proof.
- Excel
- Is a spreadsheet program distributed by Microsoft.
- Excite
- Is a Search Engine, used to search/surf the Internet/WWW found at www.Excite.com
- Exempt
- Refers to being free of being banned or kicked from a #channel.
- Explorer
- Is an abbreviation for the Internet Explorer Browser distributed by Microsoft.
- Extension
- File extensions are what are found at the end of a file i.e. .DOC, .GIF, .JPG or .TXT. There are a slew of other extensions as well, however, the list would be a mile and a half long :)
[F] - FAQ
- Is an acronym for Frequently Asked Questions. Usually a file put together from the most commonly asked questions that were not answered in a help file.
- Feedback
- Refers to text written to describe a problem or good/bad criticism.
- Field
- Refers to a section that is filled in with text.
- File
- Refers to a complete collection of data (as text or a program) treated by a computer as a unit especially for purposes of input and output i.e. a .GIF, .TXT, and .WAV are all files.
- File Transfer
- Refers to the process of sending a file to another individual through the ICQ program.
- Find/Add
- Is a feature on the ICQ program, found on the panel/contact list, to locate and add individuals you wish on your ICQ list as a friend.
- Firewall
- Refers to a program that protects your computer/PC from unwanted intruders, much like a home security system. A must on IRC. Refer to ConSeal.
- Flags
- Refers to the access given to an individual on a bot/eggdrop. Flags determine what an individual can and cannot do on or through a bot/eggdrop.
- Flashing
- Refers to an icon blinking in the taskbar, beside the MS-Windows clock/time. (Bottom right of the monitor.)
- Float
- Either refers to the button on the Java Applet to create a new window. In the float position the window can be resized. The float button is replaced by Embed to restore its original position in the web page or to the ICQ panel/friend nicknames to float on the desktop.
- Flood
- Refers to too much information being sent at one time. This may cause a disconnection from the network.
- Floppy
- Refers to a place where information is stored i.e. a floppy disk.
- Flower
- Refers to the green (on-line), red(off-line) and white/blue(indicator disabled for privacy, found in Security under Web Aware)ICQ flower.
- Folder
- Refers to a place that holds multiple files. It has a folder icon but is called a directory.
- Forget
- Used in a ChanServ command to keep a channel registered, however, no one is allow to Op off of ChanServ. /msg ChanServ SET <#channel> FORGET ON (The only way to unforget a #channel is to DROP the channel.)
- Forward
- Used in a MemoServ command to send a copy of a memo that one has received. /msg MemoServ FORWARD <index|ALL> <nickname|#channel>
- Founder
- Refers to the individual who created or registered a #channel.
- Frantic
- Is an MS-Windows client/script used to navigate IRC. It features a heap of popups as well as the basic mIRC features.
- Friend
- Refers to one attached to another by affection or esteem.
- FTP
- Is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol. One would FTP files to a shell for a web-site.
- FX
- Is an abbreviation for Effects i.e. Special Effect.
[G] - G:line
- Is a global ban from all servers on a network. i.e. banned on IrCQNet.
- Ghost
- Used in a NickServ command to retrieve your nickname if it was left behind on the server due to a disconnection or heavy lag.
- GIF
- Is a file extension for an image/picture i.e. ICQ-logo.GIF
- Global
- Either refers to status given on a bot/eggdrop to mean all or another word for global is worldwide.
- Global Wizard
- Refers to the Wizard that is used to locate another ICQ individual through the ICQ program.
- GMT
- Is an acronym for Greenwich Mean Time
- GNU
- Is an acronym for GNU's not Unix. GNU's goal is to distribute Unix programs/software free of charge.
- Is a Search Engine, used to search/surf the Internet/WWW found at www.Google.com.
- Guest
- Is what the browser Java Applet individuals are named when they fist connect to IrCQNet, if they do not choose a nickname.
- Guide
- Refers to the action to show of give a tour of something specific.
- Gzip -d
- Refers to a command in telnet to unzip the eggdrop file.
[H] - Handle
- Refers to a nickname set in the bots/eggdrops access list.
- Harass
- Refers to the act to annoy persistently.
- Hide
- Used in a NickServ command to keep specified info secluded from individuals. /msg NickServ SET HIDE <ALL|EMAIL|URL|ADDR|QUIT> <ON|OFF>
- Hoax
- Refers to being trick into believing or accepting as genuine something false and often preposterous.
- Hostmask
- Refers to the combination of the userid + IP i.e. Friends@isp.com
- HotBot
- Is a Search Engine, used to search/surf the Internet/WWW found at www.HotBot.com
- Hub
- Refers to the main bot/server in a botnet/network. The hub is what leafs link to.
[I] - ICMP
- Is an acronym for Internet Control Message Protocol. An ICMP is the standard error and control message protocol for Internet systems. The most well known use of ICMP messages is the Echo Request, Echo Reply sequence used by ping.
- ICQ
- I Seek You! Say it fast it will sound like ICQ. ICQ is not an acronym for it although many have thought of cute ones. ICQ refers to the program…not the IrCQNet. IrCQnet is a feature that ICQ provides for chat, however, is separate from the ICQ Program.

- The IP for ChanServ, HelpServ, MemoServ, NickServ, OperServ and StatServ.
- ICQRing
- Refers to a feature which is like a webring. Linking different web-sites of the same topic.
- Ident
- Refers to the text before the @ in a hostmask i.e. Friends@ISP.com Friends being the Ident.
- Identify
- Used in a ChanServ/NickServ command to prove that an individual is either the owner of a nickname or founder of a #channel. /msg ChanServ IDENTIFY <#channel> <password> or /msg NickServ IDENTIFY <password> (Please use the status window for password commands!)
- Idle
- Refers to the act of non-activity. An individual who is in a #channel yet working on something else on their computer/PC.
- Idling
- Refers to the act of non-activity. An individual who is in a #channel yet working on something else on their computer/PC.
- IE
- Is an acronym for Internet Explorer. A browser distributed by MS-Windows.
- Ignore
- Is an IRC command used to stop all communication from that individual (on all IRC clients except the Java Applet that connects through a browser. /ignore Esquire
- Illegal
- Refers to the act not according to or authorized by law.
- Illegal Operation
- Is an annoying occurrence when two programs conflict of each other one program is having difficulty. It is an error that happens often due to low resources.
- Image
- Refers to a picture.
- Impersonate
- Refers to the act to assume or act the character of another individual.
- Index
- Used in a ChanServ command to give different status' to individuals whom frequent a #channel. /msg ChanServ LEVEL <#channel> RESET <type|index|ALL>
- Indexing
- Refers to the process that the Database converter will go through to correct ICQ program errors so to convert an old DB directory.
- Info
- Is an abbreviation for information.
- Infringes
- Refers to the act to encroach upon in a way that violates law or the rights of another.
- INI
- Is a file extension for a client/script.
- Install
- Refers to set up for use of a program.
- Internet
- Refers to an electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the globe.
- Invisible
- Either refers to the outcome of an IRC command used to hide if individuals use the /names <#channel> command while they are not in the channel. /mode Esquire +i or the status on ones ICQ.
- Invite
- Is an IRC command used to join a +i #channel or ask an individual to join you in a channel you have Op status in. /msg ChanServ INVITE #MyChannel Esquire
- Impersonate
- Refers to the act to assume or act the character of another individual.
- IP
- Is an acronym for Internet Protocol. An IP is an address given to an individual by their ISP. It can be a static or dynamic IP depending on the ISP i.e. ICQ.com being the IP of the IrCQNet Services.
- IRC
- Internet Relay Chat is a text environment to chat and meet friends from all over the globe.
- IRCd
- Is an acronym for Internet Relay Chat Daemon. The IRCd is the actual program used to run a server.
- IRCle
- Is a client/script coded/scripted for the Macintosh operating system found at www.IRCle.com
- IRCNet
- Is a rather large IRC Network with many, many servers.
- IRCop
- Is an acronym for Internet Relay Chat Operator. An IRCop is an Op of the server/network. Their task is to keep the server/network up and running and to deal with the network troublemakers.
- IrCQ
- Is an abbreviation for IrCQNet.
- IrCQNet
- Refers to the name of ICQ's network on IRC. It is another great feature ICQ provides for chatting and meeting new individuals from around the globe. It is NOT part of the ICQ program. IRC is separate. Refer to IRC.
- ISDN
- Is an acronym for Integrated Services Digital Network. ISDN is a high-speed digital phone system used to connect to the Internet/WWW.
- ISP
- Is an acronym for Internet Service Provider i.e. AOL, Home or whomever you have signed with to hook you up to the Internet.
